ESCRITURA CREATIVA: PARTE 4

PERFECT

We're going to write a press report.

Even if we don't realize it, the usual objects around us can be part of terrifying crimes. Sometimes it happens that someone commits a murder using a paper clip, a letter opener or a screwdriver, but that is not where this activity is intended to go. The question is: can an object kill by itself?

The exercise is inspired by the brilliant short story "No se culpe a nadie", by the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar. In it, a man is killed by his own sweater, and falls out of a window after fighting uselessly against asphyxiation.

1. Choose an everyday object that you would use to commit a blood crime.

2. Paper, a paper clip, a sponge, a velcro strip, a coaster... Share the different ideas, how they could be used.

3. Choose an object and make it the main character of your press release.

4. Who is this object killing? Why? How? When? Where?

Remember that the object kills without human mediation. Of course, the murder must be consistent with the object's "personality": in Cortázar's story, the sweater is wrapped around its owner's head, trying to suffocate him; it would be absurd for him to try to cut his throat, as he has no way of doing so. However, a can opener will hardly succeed in drowning anyone.
